Center for Nonprofit Leadership

Since 1991, the Center for Nonprofit Leadership has provided training, technical assistance, and access to research materials that reflects its name, strengthening the leadership of nonprofit organizations in Ventura County. From the assistant managing multiple databases and phone systems, to the multitasked & multitalented executive director balancing the roles of staff leader, development director, marketing and technology expert, and accountant, to the volunteer board members who manage vision, oversight, fund/friendraising and governance, leadership is at the core of the nonprofit sector's greatest strengths and greatest needs.

Each year, the Center provides over 100 workshops and training opportunities to an estimated 2,500 participants, and an estimated 350 people will visit and use the Library and Technology Center for direct and online learning opportunities. Our goal is to empower local nonprofits to achieve greater effectiveness as they strengthen their boards, train their staff, manage budgets and operations, build strategic alliances in the community and achieve sustainable streams of funding. In addition to educational opportunities, the Center is home to the Library for Nonprofit Research & Development. In the Library, visitors may access over 1,000 publications on nonprofit management & leadership & the Foundation Center Foundation Directory Online Professional database with a listing of 96,000 foundations and corporate giving programs in the U.S. The Library plays a pivotal role in maintaining a current understanding of issues impacting nonprofits in Ventura County, including assessing key trends impacting the sector, identifying funding sources, maintaining current demographics and linking donors & funders to community needs.

Over the past three years, the Center has developed key initiatives that are making a difference in the lives of nonprofit staff and boards, and in effectiveness of delivering mission: the technology center to teach hardware and software vital to today's organizational effectiveness, board leadership to sustain the critical nature of governance, leadership and community engagement, planned and deferred giving strategies to capture Ventura County's wealth and legacies, and workshops to train, educate, explore and learn how to be better at the business of nonprofits. With access to online information, a library stocked with the latest print volumes, over 100 workshops of regional & national experts, the Center is a unique place that puts people in this important work at the heart of its efforts.
