Sehr geehrter Lenkungsausschuss des Isabella-Projekts,<\/p>\n

On the vast savannahs of East Africa, the Maasai warriors begin each encounter with a greeting that reveals the soul of their civilization: “Kasserian Ingera?” they ask. “And how are the children?”<\/p>\n

This isn’t small talk. It’s existential inquiry.<\/p>\n

The traditional response-“All the children are well”-carries the weight of their societal health. When all the children are well, life is good. The strength of the tribe, its future and its present moral standing, all converge in this simple exchange.<\/p>\n

I was thinking about this greeting while driving through the streets of Santa Paula for our Isabella Project mural unveiling and steering committee meeting. As a mid-sized agricultural town in Ventura County, nothing could seem farther from the Maasai plains than this collection of tract homes, strip malls and citrus groves nestled in a valley 90 minutes north of Los Angeles. Yet I feel something remarkable here: a community that unconsciously carries the Maasai wisdom in its heart.<\/p>\n

America in 2025 has fallen into a polarization trap. We’ve sorted ourselves into epistemic tribes, each convinced the other side threatens civilization. Our social trust metrics have cratered. We’ve become communities defined by what we hate rather than what we love. The social fabric, as political scientist Robert Putnam observed decades ago, continues its steady unraveling.<\/p>\n

But Santa Paula suggests another pattern.<\/p>\n

At our last Isabella Project gathering, I sat in a community center watching residents from across every conceivable demographic divide-white businessman, Latino mural artist, elected official who splits their time between home and Sacramento, teacher, and ballet folklorico dancer-all gathered around a shared vision called the Isabella Project.<\/p>\n

We know the Isabella Project isn’t just another well-intentioned community initiative. It represents something deeper. We are guided by a comprehensive roadmap that addresses children’s needs by reimagining everything around them-housing, education, transportation, labor policies. Our work is gloriously ambitious, occasionally unwieldy and entirely essential.<\/p>\n

What struck me wasn’t the project’s scope, but the shared moral language permeating the room. Despite our differences, we had found something powerful-a common concern for our children’s future that transcended our various tribes.<\/p>\n

I came to work at the Ventura County Community Foundation partly because I sensed this communal wisdom. There’s something beautiful about watching a community embrace tribal wisdom in modern form. When societies fragment, we typically look for sophisticated policy solutions or structural reforms. But perhaps what we need is something more ancient-the recognition that our collective well-being is measured best by how our children fare.<\/p>\n

When the Maasai answer that all their children are well, they’re expressing both reality and aspiration. In Santa Paula’s embrace of the Isabella Project, I see us doing the same-describing not just the community they have, but the one they seek to build. And in that aspiration might lie wisdom for us all.<\/p>\n

The Isabella Project is thrilled for the launch of the Guaranteed Income Pilot Program, which will help support family childcare providers in Santa Paula. With Child Development Resources of Ventura County, Inc. helping to lead the way, this program aims to uplift those who care for our youngest learners and to strengthen the foundation workforce for a more resilient early childhood system.<\/p>\n

\nEn las vastas sabanas del \u00c1frica Oriental, los guerreros mas\u00e1i comienzan cada encuentro con un saludo que revela el alma de su civilizaci\u00f3n: “\u00bfKasserian Ingera?”, preguntan. “\u00bfY c\u00f3mo est\u00e1n los ni\u00f1os?”
\nEsto no es una charla trivial. Es una pregunta existencial.
\nLa respuesta tradicional-“Todos los ni\u00f1os est\u00e1n bien”-lleva el peso de la salud de su sociedad. Cuando todos los ni\u00f1os est\u00e1n bien, la vida es buena. La fortaleza de la tribu, su futuro y su posici\u00f3n moral actual, todo converge en este simple intercambio.
\nEstaba pensando en este saludo mientras conduc\u00eda por las calles de Santa Paula para nuestra inauguraci\u00f3n del mural del Proyecto Isabella y la reuni\u00f3n del comit\u00e9 directivo. Como ciudad agr\u00edcola de tama\u00f1o mediano en el condado de Ventura, nada podr\u00eda parecer m\u00e1s alejado de las llanuras mas\u00e1i que esta colecci\u00f3n de casas unifamiliares, centros comerciales y huertos de c\u00edtricos enclavados en un valle a 90 minutos al norte de Los \u00c1ngeles. Sin embargo, siento algo notable aqu\u00ed: una comunidad que inconscientemente lleva la sabidur\u00eda mas\u00e1i en su coraz\u00f3n.
\nEstados Unidos en 2025 ha ca\u00eddo en una trampa de polarizaci\u00f3n. Nos hemos dividido en tribus epist\u00e9micas, cada una convencida de que la otra es una amenaza para la civilizaci\u00f3n. Nuestras m\u00e9tricas de confianza social se han desplomado. Nos hemos convertido en comunidades definidas por lo que odiamos en lugar de lo que amamos. El tejido social, como observ\u00f3 el polit\u00f3logo Robert Putnam hace d\u00e9cadas, contin\u00faa su constante desintegraci\u00f3n.
\nPero Santa Paula sugiere un patr\u00f3n distinto.
\nEn nuestra \u00faltima reuni\u00f3n del Proyecto Isabella, me sent\u00e9 en un centro comunitario observando a residentes de todos los grupos demogr\u00e1ficos imaginables-empresario blanco, muralista latino, funcionario electo que divide su tiempo entre su hogar y Sacramento, maestro y bailarina de ballet folcl\u00f3rico-todos reunidos en torno a una visi\u00f3n compartida llamada Proyecto Isabella.
\nSabemos que el Proyecto Isabella no es solo otra iniciativa comunitaria bien intencionada. Representa algo m\u00e1s profundo. Nos gu\u00eda una hoja de ruta completa que aborda las necesidades de los ni\u00f1os reimaginando todo lo que los rodea: vivienda, educaci\u00f3n, transporte, pol\u00edticas laborales. Nuestro trabajo es gloriosamente ambicioso, ocasionalmente dif\u00edcil de manejar y completamente esencial.
\nLo que me llam\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n no fue el alcance del proyecto, sino el lenguaje moral compartido que impregnaba la sala. A pesar de nuestras diferencias, hab\u00edamos encontrado algo poderoso: una preocupaci\u00f3n com\u00fan por el futuro de nuestros ni\u00f1os que iba m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de nuestras diversas tribus.
\nVine a trabajar a la Fundaci\u00f3n Comunitaria del Condado de Ventura en parte porque sent\u00eda esta sabidur\u00eda comunitaria. Hay algo hermoso en ver a una comunidad abrazar la sabidur\u00eda tribal de una forma moderna. Cuando las sociedades se fragmentan, t\u00edpicamente buscamos soluciones de pol\u00edticas sofisticadas o reformas estructurales. Pero quiz\u00e1 lo que necesitamos es algo m\u00e1s antiguo: el reconocimiento de que nuestro bienestar colectivo se mide mejor por c\u00f3mo les va a nuestros ni\u00f1os.
\nCuando los mas\u00e1i responden que todos sus ni\u00f1os est\u00e1n bien, est\u00e1n expresando tanto la realidad como la aspiraci\u00f3n. En el abrazo de Santa Paula al Proyecto Isabella, veo que estamos haciendo lo mismo: describiendo no solo la comunidad que tienen, sino la que buscan construir. Y en esa aspiraci\u00f3n puede que resida la sabidur\u00eda para todos nosotros.
