There are five hundred children born to Santa Paula parents each year and they all arrive as born learners. Considering that seven hundred new neural connections are formed every second in a young child’s brain, it is imperative that we strategize to take advantage of this rapid development through cognitive, emotional and wellness experiences that will propel them towards thriving and reaching their full potential.

Sadly, studies show that children living in economically challenged communities like Santa Paula can be nearly a full academic year behind their peers when they enter kindergarten-a gap that grows wider as they progress through the K-12 system. However, there are academic studies that show that these potential deficits can be mitigated through excellent early childhood education programs, like the Isabella Project, making the earliest and longest-lasting impact on the lives of these children.

But this isn’t only about Santa Paula…it’s about all the thousands of other children throughout the county who are not currently being served by early childhood education programs. As mentioned in this newsletter, education is one of the basic rights of children along with protections from violence and neglect, healthcare, nutrition, shelter and positive socio-emotional experiences. The Isabella Project is being crafted to acknowledge and deliver on these rights through its emphasis on education, wellness and positive parenting.

Save the Date for the Upcoming Parents’ Education Conference

The Isabella Project and Children’s Bill of Rights
Saturday November 19, 2022 from 8:30 – 2:30pm
Isbell Middle School (221 South 4th Street, Santa Paula CA)

This conference will elevate and acknowledge the status of children in our community, the beauty of childhood, the importance of early childhood education and the “Bill of Rights of/for Children.” The basis for Bill of Rights are the principle of non-discrimination, the principle of “the best interests of the child” in all actions and initiatives, the principle of life, survival and development, and the principle of inclusion and participation. Once children have access to education, this is the gateway to protect children from violence, which is a universal and global issue, in which education can help children to develop physical, emotional and life skills and take them to a safe place with parent and teacher awareness and care from many forms of violence, such as harsh discipline, child labor, trafficking, bullying, harmful practices, child marriage, and/or deprivation of liberty.

The most vulnerable children in the community need to be protected, especially immigrant children who should have the opportunity of life equality as well as any other.
