As needs are identified, this information will be posted on this website as well as California Volunteers\u2019s site, which strongly encourages donors to carefully research charitable organizations prior to donating to ensure that their donated funds will have the desired result.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research before you donate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/06\/business\/charity-disaster-relief.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do your research on a charity\u2019s reputation<\/a>\u00a0for using donations effectively.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charitynavigator.org\/index.cfm?keyword_list=california+fire&amp;bay=search.results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charity Navigator<\/a>\u00a0is a good source to consult. Call the organization or check its website to find out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Donate money.\u00a0<\/strong>This is generally better than giving supplies or other items that must be shipped to the disaster location. Charities helping on the ground are in a good position to know what\u2019s needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Give for the long term.<\/strong>\u00a0The effects of disasters such as the California wildfires can go on for months or years, notes Daniel Borochoff, founder of CharityWatch. So consider making additional contributions later on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beware of unsolicited appeals.<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t blindly respond to charity appeals that show up in an email or text from someone you don\u2019t know. There are hazards you likely are unaware of. Those who want to help the organization can make $10 donations to the Red Cross by texting REDCROSS to 90999 or by visiting its website,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/news\/article\/California-Wildfires-Red-Cross-Providing-Shelter-as-People-Flee-Their-Homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">redcross.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Shasta Regional Community Foundation\u00a0is accepting donations for its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shastarcf.org\/funds\/cdrf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Disaster Relief Fund<\/a>. You can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lacountyanimals.org\/give\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make a cash donation to the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation\u2019s Noah\u2019s Legacy Fund<\/a>\u00a0to support the department\u2019s disaster relief efforts.
