Nonprofit Compliance and Grantmaking
Nonprofit Compliance
Upon receipt of a grant recommendation from a fund, VCCF conducts a due diligence check on the recipient organization. Every California nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization must annually register with the California Attorney General Office and maintain a “current” registration status, unless the organization is exempt. Out-of-state nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization must register with the California Attorney General Office if they are conducting business in California, i.e. soliciting donations, receiving gifts or other assets with financial value for charitable purposes.
Here are some helpful links to the California Attorney General Website.
In addition to having a current registration, the nonprofit organization must be up to date on their tax filings with the IRS. Tax filing information is reviewed through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search Tool.
VCCF also completes a basic financial due diligence assessment as described in the attached policy "Assessing the Financial Health of Nonprofit Organizations".
