With a $1-million gift received last month, the Museum of Ventura County has established the Barbara Barnard Smith Museum of Ventura County Executive Director Fund to provide permanent and ongoing financial support for that position.

The great-granddaughter of William Dewey Hobson—often called the “Father of Ventura County”—Barbara Barnard Smith established the Fred W. Smith Gallery and led the creation of an endowment to support the George Stuart Historical Figures in the early 1990s.

The endowment was created at the Ventura County Community Foundation, which will hold, manage, invest and reinvest the fund, and will disburse the net income to the museum in accordance with the donor’s wishes.

The donation is the first major gift in the museum’s effort to raise $7.5 million for its endowment and campaign to secure the continuation of the museum.

Since September 2017, in addition to the Barbara Barnard Smith gift, $850,000 has been pledged and the museum will try to raise the remaining amount over the next five years.

Founded in 1913, the Museum of Ventura County honors the history, art and culture of the county and the Channel Islands through its collections, exhibits, educational programs and publications.
